please only knowledgeable people respond. I am a hockey official soon to be in the nhl

Check the link below to WebMD. It gives you an overview of a herniated disc and treatment options. Not enough info to give you a good informed opinion on what you should do. If there is movement of the disc (spondylolisthesis) then chiro might be a short term option but with all the potential problems on the ice as a NHL hockey official you probably need some type of surgical procedure. I have an old girlfriend who had an artificial disc (Charite) placed in at L4-L5-S1 with fusion done and now there are many lawsuits against the company and her surgery has to be reversed. Do lots of research on the doctors performing any surgical procedure. Get realistic recovery times and look into a variety of procedures. If the doctor has a problem with asking for a 2nd or 3rd opinion stay away from that doctor. I do know that here in the Tampa bay area of Florida there is a facility called the Laser Spine Institute and they do a lot of micro surgical procedures. Best of luck to you and feel free to contact me directly as with more info I can give you a better answer. I disagree with the person who claims a surgeon is going to recommend surgery. Most good surgeons operate when all other options have been exhausted. Perhaps these other folks did not see where you plan on being skating up and down refereeing hockey games. There is considerable risk that you can get hurt on the ice as you well know. Good chiropractors won't "manipulate" if they are afraid of disc movement.

Personally, I would see a chiropractor first.. Any chance you have to heal/help yourself without being cut open is well worth taking. If the chiro doesn't help, then the surgery could be an option.

These are personal thoughts though, and everyone is going to have their own. I'm a massage therapist, therefore I believe more in holistic healthcare than cutting someone open. A surgeon will tell you to have the surgery.

Try the chiro first..it is non invasive..get referrals from friends, family and co-workers, make sure they are a good one. There is also a traction type procedure for decompression.

Surgery should be your last resort after all other attempts have failed

my friend had the surgery done in January of this year. she was released to go back to work 5 weeks after surgery. she herniated L3, L4, L5, and S1. they went in and removed the herniation and took one of her vertebrate out and she says it was the best thing she ever done. she has no side effects except she can tell when it rains.. and the occasional muscle spasm.. good luck

This is a tough one. If the pressure can be treated with the regular alignments of chiropractic medicine, then avoid the surgery. However, always consult a physician before taking any of the medical advice you get here
